Scottish Aeromodellers Association

was formed sixty years ago to provide a central Scottish body dedicated to the maintenance and support of what has now become an internationally recognised sport. Catering for all model flying disciplines, the association provides for the organisation of national competitive events while promoting proficiency and development of the individual's skills through its comprehensive Safety Code and Achievement Scheme.

It also provides an authoritative means of pursuing facilities and sites with agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defence.

The Scottish Aeromodellers Association is run completely by volunteers which includes the central co-ordinating Council, the instructors, examiners, and club officials.

The S.A.A. has seventy local area model clubs throughout Scotland with around 2000 members nation-wide so whether you are new to aeromodelling or a veteran pilot, whether you are a local club member or a solo flyer, the Scottish Aeromodelling Association provides a service that enhances the hobby.
Through its Safety Code and Achievement Scheme and its network of local clubs, first class tuition is available providing safe and controlled hands-on experience.

Students are encouraged to achieve an SAA Bronze safety achievement certificate which deems a pilot competent in taking off, flying controlled circuits and landing safely. With practice and experience Silver and Gold awards can be pursued. Silver is a pre-requisite for public airshows and most competitors in the national championships are also at this level.

The association runs a number of training and testing days and weekends throughout the country to provide training support for the local clubs, these being free and well attended by novices.

Major Events

Two large events are traditionally arranged under the direction of the SAA council.
The number one event in the annual calendar is the Scottish Model Airshow. This is the SAA organisations opportunity to entertain and show the members of the public the spectacle of model flying at its best. It normally includes pilots and exhibitors from all over Europe.
The second event is our Scottish power nationals. This event is the one of a number of annual international events where the very serious top pilots compete for home and international honours. Scotland also hosts the

event as a major part of the European championship league.
